Brief story:
61 Biaxo cast iron radiators in a white finish were installed as part of the refurbishment of the historic SBB railway station at Güterstrasse 2 in Schlieren, Switzerland. Their classic column design complements the building’s period character, bringing a timeless heating solution to its renewed interiors.
The project combined the careful restoration of a listed railway building with the requirements of contemporary commercial use. The understated white finish allows the radiators to blend naturally into the interiors while retaining the distinctive character of traditional cast iron.
Schlieren’s railway history dates back to 1847, when the town became a stop on the Zurich–Baden railway, popularly known as the Spanisch-Brötli-Bahn. The surviving station building dates from the 1920s and forms part of this long railway heritage. A photograph preserved in the SBB Historic archive documents its appearance in 1963.
The refurbishment, designed by A2017+ Architekten, retained the existing structural fabric and historic surfaces while adapting the building for offices, practice rooms and an updated SBB travel centre. Work took place while railway operations continued, requiring careful coordination around the station’s technical infrastructure.
Building services were planned by Andy Wickart Haustechnik AG. As part of the modernisation, the former oil-fired heating system was replaced with a connection to the local district heating and cooling network. The Biaxo radiators complement this renewal, combining a traditional material and familiar architectural form with the building’s updated heating infrastructure.
